The purpose of the Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board is to regulate the veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians, and veterinary premises in Arizona that care for your animals. The Board also regulates animal crematories.

To work as a veterinary technician in Arizona, certification is not required; earning a CVT is a voluntary action.

The Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board issues licenses to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Arizona and certifies veterinary technicians. Licenses and certificates are renewed every two years to remain active, with an expiration date of December 31st of every even-numbered year.

Regular License:

Applicant is a graduate from a college of veterinary medicine accredited by the AVMA or holds a certificate issued by the ECFVG or PAVE and has taken the NAVLE within the past 5 years. Passing the State Veterinary Exam is required. Application fee: $400.

North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE):

All veterinary licensure candidates must pass the NAVLE in order to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine by any licensing board in North America.

The Board also reviews complaints made against licensees, conducts investigations and resolves complaints. The Board consists of nine members, appointed by the Governor to four-year terms.

All veterinary technicians work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. While a veterinary technician can assist in performing a wide variety of tasks, they cannot diagnose, prescribe, perform surgery, or engage in any activity prohibited by a state's veterinary practice act.

An unlicensed veterinarian may function as a veterinary technician. Any licensed person who assists an unlicensed person in performing tasks that the statue includes a the practice of the profession may be aiding unlicensed practice. Many states have continuing education requirements for veterinary technicians.

Only 3 states currently allow On-the-Job Training (OTJ) or alternate degrees for VTNE eligibility: Alaska, California, and Wisconsin. In this case, you will have to fill out quite a bit of paperwork and have the qualifications in order to be eligible.
